All BOE Non-Certified Staff,

Please be advised that for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2020, the employee (members) contribution rate for the Connecticut Municipal Employees Retirement System (“CMERS”) pension will increase from 6% to 6.5% according to Public Act No. 19-124. The new statute amends Conn. Gen. Stat. § 7-440. This change will be reflected in your payroll deduction as of your check on July 2, 2021 (Per the Office of the State Comptroller, CT Municipal Retirees System Division, please note that earnings paid to the employee (members) in July are subject to the new rate regardless of the period that pay represents). A similar future State mandated statutory increase of 0.5% will occur at the start of each fiscal year for the next several years.

As you may know, the final benefit you receive upon retirement is not dependent on the amount of contributions made to the plan. Rather, is specifically determined by a formula which contains three variables (service credit, age at retirement, and final average compensation).

Supervisors should communicate this information to their immediate staff, taking into consideration that not all non-certified staff employees have email access.
